Society: Inconvenience caused by Hoarding habit of Mother-Daughter duo
Adapted from The Straits Times, 24 July 2016

Living on the fourth-floor unit of Block 254 is Madam Francisca, 65, and her 24-year-old daughter. However, this is no ordinary mother and daughter. For two years, the mother and daughter have been sleeping outside their flats, doing the dishes along the corridor and braving the elements under two puny umbrellas outside their doorstep at night. Due to the clutter within the house, they would usually sleep outside the flat sheltered by two umbrellas while dishes were done by pouring water from 1.5L plastic bottles.
Besides being displaced from their flats, the duo has also brought upon obstructions to the people living around them. Neighbours who had wanted to use the staircase were forced to use a different route as the sleeping pair would block the stairwell and prevent people from crossing over.

Despite the many attempts and efforts of the Town Council which has served many notices to the flat, the same problem continually arises even after items have been cleared outside the flat. Even though it is heart wrenching to see a mother and daughter having to suffer so much due to Compulsive Hoarding Disorder, it is also an increasing social problem as the clutters could pose as potential fire hazards to the vicinity around it. Even though these people are innocent and genuinely suffering from Compulsive Hoarding Disorder they are still seen as liabilities to society.
