Family: Repeated Failure of clearing Hoarding Household

Adapted from The Straits Time, 1 May 2015

It has been 20 years since drink-stall assistant Lim Chin Ting, 74, and his wife, Madam Soh Siew Zhen, 66, have been on talking terms. Madam Soh's hoarding habit has not only resulted in the crammed and cluttered living conditions, but has also sadly, dampened the family relationship between she, her husband, and her children.

Due to Madam Soh's hoarding habits, it has led to her flat being infested by pests and vermin. However, this will be one of the many worries to come for the family as such habits has put their family relationship on the line.

Although they cared greatly for Madam Soh's condition and tried to continually clear clutters in the homes, there was a limit to how much the family could tolerate. The youngest child Mr Lim, who shifted out 15 years ago, claimed that no matter how many times the family tried to clear the clutter, the problem would always arise over again despite the efforts to rid Madam Soh of her habit. Even Madam Soh's daughter, Ms Lim, agrees that there is no way to change their mother's hoarding habits.

Although she might be receptive when spoken to calmly, Madam Soh gets aggressive once her things are being moved. The family might have gone much pain, trouble and worry due to Madam Soh's hoarding habits, but her children are still worried for her well-being and how clearance of the clutters will affect their mother emotionally.
